Author and Illustrator Kathryn Harrison started in science but soon became a business professional, communicator and, finally, an artist. After she earned a B.Sc. in Neurology, she went on to receive an M.B.A and then worked for over a decade in Marketing and Communications. Following her business career, she turned to art and obtained a Fine Art Diploma from the Toronto School of Art. Although she has done much creating in her life, in writing and illustrating her debut picture book, *Weeds in Nana's Garden*, Kathryn has been able to bring all her varied abilities together.
Stirred by her personal experience with her mother's dementia, Kathryn created this book to support families and spread awareness of Alzheimer's Disease and other dementias.
In addition to the book, Kathryn has written many blog posts, created several artworks and spoken at events about caregiving. She found her children were extremely valuable members of the caregiver team and is determined to find ways to encourage more kids to get involved with their loved ones when dementia enters a family.
To take it further, Kathryn founded Flipturn Publishing to publish her book in order to make donations to the Alzheimer Society of Canada for every book sold. A former competitive swimmer, Kathryn used the name 'Flipturn' to acknowledge the need to turn and face a new direction once dementia arrives in your life. And stay tuned; this publishing company has another book underway for launch in the Spring of 2018.
